Kara Mudd, DMSc, MSPAS, PA-C, stresses the importance of reconsidering a diagnosis or opting for patch testing when a patient’s rash fails to respond to conventional treatments. To demonstrate this, she shared the case of a 54-year-old female who was treated for chronic spontaneous urticaria but continued to suffer from persistent facial and neck dermatitis. Subsequent comprehensive patch testing revealed multiple contact allergens, including fragrances and acrylates, commonly found in personal care items like shampoo. By using an app to strictly avoid these triggering ingredients, the patient achieved significant skin clearance within four to six weeks, illustrating how overlapping conditions can coexist.
